Ostensibly a novelized documentary of New York low life, The Messenger instead turns out to be an appeal to the prurience and prejudice of readers who will put it down more firm than ever in their misbegotten conviction that, "Yeah, that's the
way them niggers and fairies live." Bad, and too bad. Mr. Wright has talent. He might have written a fine book.
